So what, you ask, do you really need to do to fight (or even stop) the signs of aging? Excellent question, and the real meat and potatoes of the issue. Let’s get some answers now.

Preserve Elasticity

When you’re young, your skin is like elastic – it stretches and moves with your facial muscles then tightens back up when you relax your muscles. The same concept goes for when you pinch your cheeks to get some color or rub your skin while you’re putting on lotion. You move it, it moves back into shape.

And let us not forget our biggest enemy, gravity – that evil force that pulls everything that’s supposed to be round and firm straight to the floor as we get older.

There are two main substances that are responsible for keeping everything tight, smooth, and in place – collagen and elastin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that holds your skin to your muscles. When you’re young, your body produces it in abundance. As you age, you make less of it and your skin isn’t held as tightly to your muscles and tissues.

Elastin is a protein that keeps your skin flexible and elastic. It’s what moves your skin back into place and keeps it from stretching. Stretching, of course, causes excess skin that results in sagging and wrinkles. Again, as we age, our bodies produce less elastin.

Keep Pores Small

Another issue that we have to address in our efforts to remain youthful looking is large pores. As with everything else in life, understanding this process is half the battle.

Your pores don’t actually get bigger – it’s an illusion caused by a buildup of cells around your pore opening that make them look larger. This buildup is caused by poor exfoliation, sun damage, excessive oil and several other factors, many of which are fixable with simple, proper skin care.

Keep Skin Moist

Dry skin is brittle skin. You can’t expect it to jump back into place and remain smooth and beautiful if it doesn’t have enough moisture and lubrication. There are a couple of different things that you need to do in order to preserve the moisture levels in your skin.

If you’ve read any of the other skin care articles on this site, you’ll see that I almost constantly preach the need to drink enough water. Your skin is your largest organ and the last one in line to get watered by your body. If you drink less water than you need, you’re body’s going to funnel it to other organs that need it to keep you alive and leave your skin out.

This is bad because water is essential to the supple texture, smooth function, and healthy glow that you want your skin to have. So the best and easiest thing to do is DRINK UP!

There’s also this awesome little substance called hyaluronic acid that is amazing at helping your skin retain moisture. Unfortunately, just as with collagen and elastin, your body produces less and less of it as you age. There are also behaviors and chemicals that destroy the natural hyaluronic acid that you already have. It’s all good though because there are natural ways that you can fight this, as you’ll learn throughout this series.

Maintain Good Skin Tone

The final things that really makes your skin look old are age spots and discoloration due to sun damage. Again, there are several natural ingredients that are awesome at maintaining and regaining that even, peaches and cream complexion that you had when you were in your 20’s and 30’s.
