Dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 Review

The “Smart”Primer, or Just Another Bad Choice in Makeup?

As you get older, your face may need a bit more than a thin layer of foundation in order to look flawless.

As a matter of fact, if you don’t prepare your face before putting on your foundation, chances are pretty good that you’re just going to highlight your flaws instead of hiding them.

That’s where a good primer comes in. In essence, it smoothes your flaws, fills your lines and basically lays a smooth foundation for your foundation.

As with all face products though, the trick is finding one that actually works for you without drying you out, breaking you out or otherwise causing more mischief than good.

Dermalogica claims to have just the primer that you’re looking for: their Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer with SPF 30. Snappy name, but does it work?

Dermalogica has an excellent reputation for creating effective, healthy products that actually focus on making your skin healthier. Instead of using traditional marketing techniques and clever packaging, they use education, innovation and professional word of mouth. Basically, they let their products speak for themselves.

Let’s take a close look at this primer to see if it’s actually a step toward skin health, or just another chemical-laden cover up.

What Do They Claim?

Since it’s a primer, it’s no surprise that this product is supposed to brighten your complexion, smooth fine lines, and make the texture of your skin flawless so that you can apply your makeup. It uses “velvety silicones” to smooth your skin’s surface while a neutral-colored tint helps balance out your skin tone and gives you a nice luminosity.

The primer also supposedly has peptides along with their patented AGE SMART to help protect your skin from free radicals, MMP’s and other environmental damage. Finally, the product protects you from sun damage.

According to Dermalogica, you can wear it over your moisturizer to cover flaws and lend a little brightness to your skin or you can use it underneath your foundation as a true primer.

What’s In It?

If you’re up on your beauty ingredients, you know that those in the know are practically to the point of fisticuffs when the topic of silicone comes up and this product actually boasts of using it. All that I really have to say is this: if you’re going to use a primer, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t use silicone as the primary smoothing and filling agent. That is, after all, what it’s for cosmetically and it works. Let’s move on.

The first two ingredients in the SkinPerfect Primer are the barrier sunscreens zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. So far, so good. Then come the silicones along with silica, which is basically sand. Those are obviously your wrinkle and scar fillers. Think of them as putty that you use to cover cracks and holes in your wall before you paint it.

After the aesthetic ingredients, there are numerous natural oils, peptides, and even hydrolyzed pearl. This is a product that contains amino acids that protect your skin and promote healing. Other cool ingredients include hyaluronic acid and arginine. There are no parabens but there are some PEG’s and other preservatives that you may or may not approve of.

Overall, this ingredients list is decent and has some big hitters in both the “looking beautiful” and “looking younger” categories.

What Are Users Saying?

Users love, love, love Dermalogica’s Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer. Regardless of where you look, everybody raves about it. Used alone, it provides a nice, light, slightly shimmery coverage without looking cakey and it’s great for perfecting your tone and texture to make your foundation look flawless, too.

Most importantly, people say that they are noticing improvements in skin tone and signs of aging even when they’re not wearing the product. Ding, ding, ding…we may just have a winner!

It is a bit pricey but a very small dollop on your fingertip covers your whole face, so unlike other products, you won’t be using much of it to get the desired results.

Final Word

I like the reviews on this product and, for the most part, I like the ingredients. Unlike many other face products, it’s not packed with unpronounceable chemicals and there are many more good things than bad in it. Most importantly, it apparently works, both as a primer/cover-up and as an anti-aging product.

As we’ve already stated, it IS a bit pricey, but I’ve done some digging for you. Click here to find the best deals on Dermalogica’s Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer.
