    Unlike its sister antioxidants vitamins C and E, alpha lipoic acid is soluble in both water and fat. This means that it’s usable throughout the body. It’s actually created by your body and is used to turn glucose into energy. It’s also pretty amazing at fighting free radicals, which protects your skin from wrinkles and is easily absorbed by your skin.

  10. DMAE

    DMAE, or dimethylaminoethanol, is a naturally occurring substance in your body that is an important part of cell membranes. It also facilitates the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Used in studies, it’s been shown to decrease the age-related decline in mental function and memory. Another interesting side effect, and one that’s most relevant, is that it also reduces the accumulation of flipofuscin (a cellular pigment made up of chunks of molecular waste) deposits inside cells.

    This accumulation is suspected to contribute significantly to the aging process. Nobody’s sure whether or not this is what contributes to the fact that DMAE has tightening effects on facial skin but it does. Though the exact reason has yet to be found, there are definitely studies that show that DMAE is at least moderately effective.

    Studies, however, also show that DMAE doesn’t reverse sag but can prevent further damage.

Some of them include alpha hydroxy, resveratrol, and vitamin E, also known as tocopheryl acetate. Aloe is also a handy moisturizing and healing agent that is nice to have, especially if you have irritated skin.

First you’re sweating, then you’re freezing. You’re grumpy, tired and miserable.

On top of feeling like crap, your skin’s dull, you’re hair’s limp and it seems like you’re getting a new wrinkle every day.

Welcome to menopause, the biggest battle in your war against getting old.

The information available out there regarding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is contradictory and confusing.

If you’ve been looking for relief, you’ve probably uncovered the great HRT debate: One side swears that you can’t make it through menopause without it. The other side says that HRT will give you cancer.

Many from both sides agree that the risks associated with HRT are often outweighed by the risks associated with menopause but what’s the truth? If you’re trying to decide whether or not HRT is right for you, then keep reading.

I’ve researched the benefits and risks of HRT using information from top-notch medical research facilities and am going to share what I found in the following paragraphs.

What is HRT?

There are actually two options available if you’re considering hormone replacement therapy. There’s traditional HRT and the new bioidentical HRT. What’s the difference? Let’s find out.

  • HRT

    Hormone replacement therapy has long been the gold standard for treating symptoms of menopause as well as for preventing maladies such as osteoporosis and heart disease that are associated with menopause and low estrogen levels.

    Women who are experiencing natural menopause at around the typical age of 50 are generally given two hormones in tandem: estrogen and progestin, a synthetic version of progesterone. These hormones are typically derived from the urine of horses, or from plant sources.

    This cocktail is used because the use of estrogen alone increases your risk of uterine and endometrial cancers. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, you’ll probably just be prescribed estrogen alone if you can’t manage your symptoms naturally.

  • Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy:

    There’s a new kid on the block now called bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BRHT). These are hormones that are derived from plant sources and bioengineered using a saliva sample to match your personal hormonal needs in levels that are supposedly exactly right for you.

    These “natural” hormones are being touted as the best things since sliced bread in the hormone industry by the companies that produce them but there are a couple of problems with them:

    • The hormone levels in your saliva don’t reflect the hormone levels in your blood, nor do they correspond to the menopausal symptoms that you’re having, so the test is skewed from the beginning.

    • The hormones are “matched” to your DNA in a compounding facility that may not be held to the same high standards that commercially produced hormones are.

    • Even though they’re advertised as “natural”, bioidentical hormones have to undergo commercial processing to become bioidentical. Many commercially produced hormones such as Estrace (standard estrogen replacement) and Prometrium (a natural progesterone replacement) are also derived naturally from plants.

    The bottom line is that some women can benefit from the non-typical dosages but there’s very little research that supports using bioidentical hormones over standard, commercially-produced ones. At least not yet. There’s also the fact that since they’re fairly new, there aren’t any long-term trials to show what the long-term effects of BHRT may be.

How Do I Take HRT?

Good question. most forms of HRT or BHRT are available as suppositories, vaginal creams, pills, patches or injections. The method right for you will depend on what your symptoms are as well as what you’re taking.

What are the benefits of HRT?

Though hormone replacement therapy used to be used on a long-term basis, that’s no longer the case. There are, however, a few health benefits that you may derive from them even by using them just to get you through the crunch. These are, of course, in addition to the relief that you’ll get from your menopause symptoms. They include:

  • Decreased risk of heart disease: There is some data that suggests that taking estrogen early in your postmenopausal years may decrease your risk of heart disease. There are some studies being conducted now on younger women in premenopausal conditions but the results won’t be available for several years.

  • Osteoporosis Prevention: hormone therapy during and after menopause has been shown to prevent the bone loss associated with menopause. This, in turn, prevents the development of osteoporosis. Incidentally, it may also help with tooth decay and loss during and after menopause.

  • Reduced risk of colorectal cancer: There are several studies that indicate that hormone therapy may reduce your risk of colorectal cancer significantly.

  • Memory loss: Estrogen may help protect you from age-related memory loss and mental decline. Some studies are even suggesting that it may even help Alzheimer’s patients.

Other symptoms of aging that HRT may help include:
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Migraines
  • Vision
  • Diabetes
  • Urinary Tract Infections

Risks of HRT

Now it’s time to get down to brass tacks. Let’s talk about the potential downsides to adding artificial chemicals to your body when it stops making the originals.

The problem with everything that’s mentioned below is that it’s all under fierce debate, with each side having studies to back up their claims. To make it easy for you, every risk that we’re going to discuss has only been shown in most studies to be increased slightly by the use of HRT.

  • Breast cancer
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease (remember though, that some studies have shown that HRT DECREASES your risk of heart disease!)
  • blood clots
  • Abnormal or false positive mammograms.
  • Asthma
  • Gallstones
  • Endometrial cancer

Side Effects

In addition to potential health risks, there are also some side effects of estrogen and progestin. Most are mild and will probably fade away after you’ve been on the therapy for a few weeks. Your body simply needs to get used to having the hormones again.


  • headaches
  • Irregular vaginal spotting or discharge
  • Nausea
  • Fluid retention
  • Weight gain
  • Skin blotches or darkening, particularly on your face
  • Breast tenderness
  • Gallstones
  • In rare cases, your endometriosis or fibroid cysts or tumors may worsen


  • Mood changes
  • Headaches
  • Breast tenderness
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Vaginal discharge
  • As you can see, there are several potential risks to using HRT and the side effects are no walk in the park either. If your menopause symptoms are severe though, it may be the best choice for you.

    More than likely, your doctor is also going to suggest that you modify your diet and make some lifestyle changes in order to help you cope with menopause even if he does start you on HRT. Have Some Salmon!

One study showed that eating fish twice per week can decrease your risk of developing AMD by as much as 30%. When you add the benefits that omega 3’s have on your eyes to all of their other health benefits, it’s a no-brainer that fish oils should be an integral part of your diet. Provitamin A

Carotenoids are, in essence, the pigments found in certain foods that your body converts into provitamin A. The way that vitamin A works to protect your eyes is two-fold. The carotenoids strengthen the pigmentation in the macula and the anti-oxidants work to protect your eyes from the damage caused by free radicals. Some visible benefits include:

  • The correct amount of moisture in your eyes, which increases acuity
  • The ability to adjust to changes in light
  • Prevention of the formation of cataracts
  • Decreased chances of developing ARD, the leading cause of blindness on the planet

The benefits of incorporating carotenoids into your diet include a lower risk of AMD and other age-related diseases. There are 3 carotenoids that are responsible for good eye health: zeaxanthin, beta carotene, and lutein.

  • Zeaxanthin -This is the carotenoid that’s is found in the highest concentrations in your central macula. It helps protect your eyes from light damage, among other things. Most green, leafy veggies such as kale, broccoli, collard greens and brussel sprouts are great sources. Others that may be a little more surprising include eggs, bell peppers, paprika, and kiwi.
  • Beta-Carotene – Remember when your mother (and that affable cartoon bunny, Bugs) told you that carrots helped you see better? Well, they were 100% correct. Carrots are an amazing source of beta-carotene, the carotenoid that your body converts to retinol and uses throughout your eye for various protective functions. In fact, your eyes NEED it to maintain good vision.

    Men need about 1000 retinol equivalents (RE) per day, and women need about 800 RE’s. To give you a general idea of how much this is, a carrot has about 2000 RE, a mango has about 600 RE, your average sweet potato has roughly 2600 RE, and for those of you who can eat it without cringing, liver supplies a whopping 11,000 RE!

  • Lutein – The final carotenoid that you absolutely must have for eye health is lutein. It works in the highest concentration in your central macula and protects you from damage that leads to cataracts and macular degeneration. In fact, just 6 mg of lutein per day has been shown to decrease your risk of AMD by as much as 57%!

    You can find lutein in such foods as broccoli, peas, and green peppers, or you may choose to supplement with it.

To close out our vitamin A discussion, we need a drum roll…SPINACH is the superfood of this entire discussion. It contains all 3 of the carotenoids, plus vitamin C that we’re going to discuss next, in a high enough concentration that one cooked serving per day can give you all that you need to keep your eyes healthy. That’s right – listen to Popeye – he knew what he was talking about!

Vitamin B

The B vitamins are must-haves for eye health. B2 (roboflavin) and B3 (niacin) are shown to reduce your risk of cataracts. B6 helps with retinol health and B12 helps keep your eyes moist. Therefore, both B6 and B12 may help reduce your risk of developing AMD.

Foods rich in the B vitamins include bananas, avocados, almonds, dairy products, kidney beans, tuna, salmon, mushrooms and peanuts.

Vitamin C Not only does it help you fight off colds, vitamin C is also great for your eyes! You probably already know that you can get it from citrus fruits but other sources that you may not know about include broccoli, kiwis, strawberries and bell peppers.


The final nutrient that is amazing for your eyes includes zinc. People with macular degeneration exhibit low levels of zinc in the eye and it’s been shown that this mineral helps assists in enzyme function in your retina. Because zinc can interact with other minerals in your body, it’s best to get it from dietary sources such as peanuts, pumpkin seeds, lamb, oysters and lean beef.

Truly Visionary or Just Smoke and Mirrors?

Lancome’s new Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector is touted by its maker to be the latest in age defying technology, but is it really?

As usual, we’re going to take an unbiased look at what this supposed wrinkle fighting superhero is all about.

By the end of this article, you’ll have the information that you need to make an informed decision before you invest your time and money in yet another time fighting product to clutter your vanity.

What Lancome Claims

According to the high-end beauty giant, their new Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector is much more than a wrinkle corrector. They say that it’s capable of “fundamentally re-creating more beautiful skin” in just 4 weeks. Lancome claims that it blasts wrinkles, evens skin tone, corrects imperfections caused by such things as sun damage, and reduces pore size.

The magic ingredient is the brand new LR 2412, a molecule that they say is designed to work through all of your skin’s layers, triggering a “cascading series of micro-transformations.” What exactly does that mean and what is this new anti-aging superhero?

What is LR 2412?

The initials in the ingredient are simply Lancome’s initials (LR) and 2412 is the number of attempts that they made before they were ready to market this product or, according to them, the number of trials it took to perfect it.

They’re being tight-lipped about the actual active ingredients but according to some pretty good sources, it’s jasmonic acid and adenosine (both of which are listed on the ingredients list).

Jasmonic acid is a compound found in plants that may play a role in cell development, healing and cell defense. The problem is that the structure of plant cells is very different from the structure of human cells so the likelihood of getting the same results is shaky at best.

Jasmonic acid is making quite a splash in the beauty industry but there’s not much scientific evidence to back it up. It’s possible that it works similarly to alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids, which are available in much less expensive products.

Adenosine is an anti-inflammatory that plays a role in energy transformation at the cellular level. That sounds good but there’s still research being conducted on the product to determine its actual effectiveness as an age-defying tool.

What Else Is In It?

Another great question. The other ingredients in the product seem to be mostly smoke and mirrors – silicones, reflecting agents and light refracting agents that soften your skin and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and large pores by reflecting light away from them. They don’t actually go away. There’s also a significant amount of alcohol in the product, so it may irritate your skin or dry you out.

On the up side, it also contains hyaluronic acid which we know is a compound found naturally in your connective tissues and acts as a lubricant. The amazing thing about hyaluronic acid is that it can hold many times its weight in water, so it’s great for retaining moisture and plumping dehydrated skin.

What Users Are Saying

This is where it gets a little dicey because the product seems to be one of those love it or hate it types. For the most part though, it’s divided pretty evenly into what people like and what they don’t and it’s pretty much what I expected.


  • Makes skin tone appear more even and may reduce redness
  • Reduces the appearance of under eye circles
  • Some claim that it reduced the appearance of acne scars
  • Many liked the scent
  • Feels satiny (of course it does – it has silicone in it)


  • Many people, especially those with acne-prone skin, claim that it irritated their skin and caused breakouts
  • Bottle is opaque and is a pump so you can’t see how much product is left and there may be some product waste
  • It’s scented, so if you’re sensitive to fragrances, this product may bother you
  • Alcohol is the 3rd ingredient listed which means that there’s a significant amount in the product. This may cause collagen breakdown and free radical damage to your skin
  • It’s expensive

Final Word

If you’re just looking for a product that makes your skin feel soft and look bright, then you may like Lancome’s Visionnaire. When you’re young, your body replaces the bone faster than it absorbs the old bone, which causes your bone mass to increase. You reach peak bone mass in your early 20’s. As you get older, your body starts slowing down production and you lose bone mass faster than your body can replace it. Your bones then become porous and weak if you don’t take steps to prevent it.

Your likelihood of developing osteoporosis is dependent upon how much bone mass you accumulated when you were young, so it’s extremely important to get plenty of the necessary minerals during that time. If you didn’t though, there are still things that you can do to build bone and reduce your risk of injury.

Who’s at Risk?

Though osteoporosis affects adult men and women of all races, there are some factors that increase your risk. These include:

  • Sex – Women are much more likely to develop osteoporosis than men.

  • Age – Women over 50 and men over 70 are at higher risk.

  • Genetics – If your family has a history of bone loss or fractures, you’re at a higher risk.

  • Size – People with smaller frames are more likely to develop osteoporosis.

  • Low Hormones – Women’s estrogen levels dramatically decrease during menopause and men’s testosterone levels gradually decrease as they age. People with thyroid, parathyroid, or adrenal problems are also more prone to experience bone loss due to hormonal changes caused by these problems.

  • Dietary Issues – People who don’t eat enough calcium on a regular basis, people with anorexia or other eating disorders, and people who have had weight loss surgery are all at a higher risk for osteoporosis.

  • Medications –There are certain medications that effect the way that your body absorbs calcium or rebuilds bone. Some of these include certain anti-convulsants, anti-depressants, cancer treatments, steroids, meds for gastric disorders, and transplant anti-rejection drugs.

  • Bad Habits – Choices such as smoking, drinking alcohol excessively, and living a sedentary lifestyle all increase your risk of developing osteoporosis.

As you can see, many of these factors are directly within your control. Just by making good life choices, you’re already taking steps to protect your bones.

How Can You Tell If You Have Bone Loss?

Many people don’t find out that they have weak bones until they actually break one of them. There is a test that your doctor can administer called a dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) that measures the density of the bones in your spine, hips and wrists. These are the places most susceptible to osteoporosis. The test is painless and quick.

How Can You Prevent Osteoporosis?

I’m glad that you asked because there are 5 main things that you can do to keep your bones dense and strong. By incorporating these healthy habits into your lifestyle, you’re drastically reducing your risk of bone loss.

  1. Get Plenty of Calcium – This is the main component of bone and if you don’t get enough, your bones WILL get weak. Adults 18-50 need 1000 mg per day. Women over 50 and men over 70 need 1200 mg per day. Good sources of calcium include:

    • Dairy products
    • Green, leafy veggies
    • Canned fish with bones included (salmon or sardines are great)
    • Soy products
    • Products that have calcium added

    It’s way better to get your calcium from dietary sources because it’s proven that your body absorbs it best when it’s consumed naturally, but if you can’t eat enough calcium-rich foods, you can always take a supplement.

  2. Get Plenty of Vitamin D – Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, so if you’re not getting enough D, it doesn’t matter how much calcium you’re getting. Scientists haven’t determined an ideal dose, but 600-800 international units per day is a good place for adults to start. You can safely take up to 4000 IU’s a day. Good sources of this vitamin include:

    • Sunshine! That’s right – you can absorb much of your daily requirement of vitamin D directly from the sun.
    • Fish and shellfish – Nearly all fish are great sources of vitamin D, especially fatty fish such as salmon, halibut, herring, sardines, trout and mackerel. Shrimp and oysters are also great sources.
    • Foods fortified with vitamin D such as milk, cereals, and juices.
  3. Exercise – Combine strength training exercises with weight bearing exercises such as jumping rope, jogging, and stair climbing. Strength training exercises help build muscles that prevent injury and also build bone in your upper body. Weight bearing exercises work primarily by building bone in your lower body. Exercising not only strengthens and builds bone, it also slows your rate of bone loss.

  4. Quit Smoking – Smoking decreases the rate at which calcium is absorbed in your digestive tract. It also decreases estrogen levels in women, which we’ve already discussed as a factor that increases your risk of osteoporosis. Now you have yet another reason to stub out that smoke and throw the pack away.

  5. Drink Moderately – Consuming more than one drink per day may affect the way that your body absorbs calcium and builds bone. Drinking to excess also increases your risk of falling and breaking bones, so do like the commercials say and drink responsibly!

Now that you know what you need to do in order to avoid osteoporosis, get to work. Eat right, exercise, and drop the bad habits. After all, you only get one set of bones – take care of them!

A Miracle OTC Foundation, or Just Another Fail?

Are you always on the hunt for the perfect foundation for your mature skin but always seem to come up short?

If so, you’re in good company with the rest of us. The search for an affordable foundation that makes you look fresh-faced and beautiful instead of blotchy and painted is a journey that we’re all taking together.

Revlon has been a powerhouse in the drug store makeup market for decades and now they’ve introduced a new product for aging skin called Age Defying Foundation with DNA Advantage.

We’re going to take a look at their latest product to see if our search for the perfect foundation is over.

Revlon’s Claim

The drugstore powerhouse says that their product combines powerful anti-aging skincare technology with makeup in order to help protect your skin’s DNA from the signs of aging. They claim that 96% of women saw “flawless, younger looking skin in less than 2 weeks.” They say that fine lines and wrinkles will be visibly improved and your skin will be hydrated and revitalized.

That’s a pretty lofty claim, Revlon. Let’s take a look at the fine print. Basically they’re claiming that their product helps you protect your skin because it has SPF 20, and it also helps you fight free radical damage with antioxidants.

What’s In It?

The Age Defying Foundation with DNA Advantage is said to contain sunscreen, vitamins B3 and E, West Indian Cherry Extract and “highly effective humectants”. If we’re lucky, they mean hyaluronic acid, that little powerhouse of a moisturizer that we talk about in our Top 10 Anti-Aging Ingredients Article.

What’s The Real Deal?

Unfortunately, most people that tried this product didn’t have many positive comments. It does seem to work better on dry skin, but even then there are still some problems. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons so that you can decide for yourself whether or not this is the product for you.


  • It’s inexpensive. At about $12, it’s affordable for most people
  • It seems to be good for people with really dry skin
  • It provides a buildable coverage so that you can cover problem spots
  • It has a shimmer for people who like that dewy look
  • Doesn’t settle in fine lines or wrinkles
  • Rubs off onto clothing, even after it’s had time to set
  • No reports of wrinkle reduction with most users
  • Not all products have sunscreen listed as an ingredient
  • Some people report a “cakey” texture and look
  • Shimmer is really obvious so if you like a matte look, this may not be for you
  • Coverage is sheer unless you apply several layers
  • People report difficulty finding the correct shade
  • Some users with sensitive skin reported breakouts
  • Comes in pump so you can’t use all of the product

Final Word

If you’re looking for the perfect anti-wrinkle foundation, this doesn’t appear to be it. Though users did report that it left their skin feeling soft and looking good when they took it off, the makeup is messy, cakey-looking and needs to be retouched several times per day. Most users reported the need to blot throughout the day as well.

Though the product contains antioxidants and “humectants”, there really isn’t a big-gun anti-aging ingredient in it. The vitamins, though definitely good for your body, may not be as readily absorbed into your skin. As far as foundations go, this one seems to be in the love it or hate it category, with most of the votes going in the latter direction.

    MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is a sulfur compound that occurs naturally and is part of the diet of nearly all vertebrates. Unfortunately, MSM occurs in such small quantities that it’s not feasible to extract it from natural sources so it’s made synthetically by reacting dimethyl sulfoxide and hydrogen peroxide.

    Interestingly enough, sulfur allergies aren’t affected by MSM. As a matter of fact, there have been no adverse side effects reported by users.

    Now that you know what MSM is, let’s talk about what it does. This part gets kind of tricky because scientists don’t know exactly how it works.
