Foods that Slow Aging and Help You Look Younger

Our society has become hyper-sensitive to health and wellness.

That being said, we should all know by now what foods are bad for us. These foods include fast food, trans-fats and foods high in simple carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour.

We all know what we should avoid, but what foods are actually good for us?

What foods should we be eating to slow the aging process and extend our lives?

Throughout this article, we’re going to discuss several foods that can keep you healthy and young looking.

How Can Food Keep You Looking Young?

It is important to note that as we age, we can become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals that may not have affected us in our younger years. As you get older, you may not be able to digest food as well as you did when you were younger, and so you aren’t getting the same nutrients out of your diet.

Much of the aging process is attributed to the fact that our cells start to break down and decay, leading to wrinkles and problems with skin elasticity. Free radicals contribute to this process significantly, so it’s important to eat foods that are rich in the antioxidants that destroy them.

According to the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, “blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity.”

The highest concentration of antioxidants are found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables. The riches sources of these free radical fighters are berries including blueberries, blackberries and raspberries and leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and broccoli.

How Do Antioxidants Help?

Free radicals are generated through things like pollution, sunlight, even respiration. Though a certain amount of free radicals are actually vital to some bodily functions such as removing dead cells, an abundance of them wreaks havoc on your body.

The anti-oxidants in the fruits and vegetables we discussed attach themselves to free radicals and carry them safely out of your body to help protect from the ravages of time.

Other good sources of antioxidants include:

  • Salmon, which is also rich in omega 3’s. Read our Benefits of Omega 3’s article to see how this helps keep you young and healthy.
  • nuts
  • dark chocolate
  • green tea

If you can make it a point to institute these foods into your normal diet you will not only will slow down the aging process, but you will also protect your body from diseases that come with age, such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and stroke.

Eat them raw as much as possible because cooking can damage the antioxidants and enzymes that fight free radicals. If you do cook them, just steam them so that they’re al-dente (still firm) because the more you cook them, the more nutrients you lose.

Finally, if you have the opportunity to purchase any of these foods as organic products, do it; the extra cost is more than worth it. The fact that there are no pesticides, chemicals, or artificial ingredients present in the production of these foods will help your body out even more.

If you’re not a big fan of fruits and veggies, you can also supplement with antioxidants though it’s not as good as eating them! Click here to find a good antioxidant supplement.

Is Juvederm Worth It?

If you read magazines or watch TV, the chances are you’ve seen an ad for Juvederm recently. Juvederm is the new dermal filler developed by the same company who created Botox and it is generating a lot of interest.

However, while it definitely has its advantages over Botox, when prices at $400-$800 per syringe patients must ask themselves, “is Juvederm worth it?”

How Juvederm Works

Juvederm is a gel made from hyaluronic acid, which helps to hydrate and add volume. The gel is injected under the skin using a fine needle to fill the soft tissue of your inner layer of skin. The result is more volume and fewer wrinkles and folds.

Benefits of Juvederm

  • Juvederm is one of the few FDA approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
  • Considered a better option than Botox for those seeking injections in and around the lips and cheeks as Botox is not intended for the lower half of the face.
  • Available in two formulations allowing more tailored treatment to meet your needs.
  • Requires no allergy skin test and minimal recovery or downtime.
  • Clinically proven to smooth facial wrinkles and folds.

Risks of Juvederm

  • The results last less than 1 year (typically between 6 and 8 months).
  • It is expensive. Each syringe costs between $400-$800 and the average patient will require at least 2-3 syringes each year to maintain the desired effects.
  • Negative reviewers of Juvederm have reported hyaluronic acid “leaking” into other parts of their face causing pain, swelling and requiring further treatments to correct the problem.

Cosmetic Tourism in Colombia

cosmetic tourism colombia

While cosmetic tourism is growing all over the world, Colombia in particularly has gotten a boost from an interesting new procedure called the Colombian Hi-Def Butt Lift.

We originally reported on this procedure after it was featured on popular TV show The Doctors, but we never would have guessed that its demand would grow to be so high.

Popularity of Colombian Hi-Def Butt Lift

Apparently, patients are finding it difficult to locate affordable plastic surgeons offering the new procedure here locally. Quotes for the procedure can range from $15,000 to $30,000 across the United States. However, while the Hi-Def Butt Lift is a relatively new procedure outside of Brazil, it has been performed in Colombia for many years. In Colombia, the average cost of a Hi-Def Butt Lift is just $5,000 which is a savings of over 60%.

Long wait times for certain procedures, the ease and affordability of international travel, and improvements in both technology and standards of care in many countries have led to the increasing popularity of cosmetic tourism.

Aside from the obvious cost benefits of cosmetic tourism, many patients have been enticed by the idea of turning a procedure into a vacation. Rather than recovering at home or in a hospital room, patients in Colombia are recuperating in 4 and 5 star resorts. It definitely makes sense. Why come home with embarrassing bandages when you could come home with a tan? The primary concern of most Americans is the quality of hospitals and surgeons in Colombia. However, many patients have been shocked to discover that the facilities in Colombia were equal if not better to those in America.

Let us know what you think. Would you consider traveling to Colombia for a procedure and vacation or would you pay the premium to have the work done here?

Matrixyl vs Matrixyl 3000

Matrixyl is a powerful little peptide that stimulates your skin. However, peptides can be synthesized in an infinite amount of combinations for varying results.

Is the Matrixyl 3000 compound an upgrade from regular Matrixyl or is it something completely different? Peptides can be confusing, which is why we will attempt to explain the differences between these two the best we can.

Matrixyl is a trademark name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-3, which is a peptide chain of fatty acids mixed with amino acids that stimulates collagen production. Loss of collagen leads to the thinning and wrinkling of aging skin, but Matrixyl helps to counteract this process. In fact, anti-wrinkle products containing Matrixyl have had clinical studies reporting wrinkle reduction by as much as 36%.

You will often see skin care products advertising the use of peptides, but the manufacturers rarely go into detail about them. For example, Olay’s new line of Regenerist products contain, “a concentrated form of an exclusive amino-peptide complex,” which is a fancy way of saying they contain palmitoyl pentapeptide-3. When looking for products with peptides like Matrixyl, it is important to know which ingredients you are looking for and skip straight to the back of the label.

Examples of Products with Matrixyl

Matrixyl 3000

Matrixyl 3000, another trademark name, is what’s called a matrikine combination. Matrikines are small peptides, usually between 3 and 8 amino acids, which until recently were not used for cosmetic purposes. Two matrikines, palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, combine to form Matrixyl 3000. It seems that they produce a synergy when used together. One stimulates collagen to speed the tissue repair process, while the other helps attract fibroblasts to the site of the wound.

While neither of Matrixyl 3000’s peptides are related to the original Matrixyl, the benefits are very similar. The results appear promising and Matrixyl 3000 provides significant reduction in both the depth and volume of wrinkles.

Examples of Products with Matrixyl 3000

Both ingredients are widely used by some of the top skin care manufacturers today and have proven to be highly effective at reducing wrinkles. However, while Matrixyl 300 claims to be more effective than Matrixyl, it remains to be proven by independent published clinical studies. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure, selecting a product with either of these active ingredients is certain to provide good results on aging skin.

Best Anti-Aging Sunscreen

It is said that the best anti-aging product on the market is sunscreen, but this only holds true if you actually use it. Therefore the best anti-aging sunscreen is the one you are willing to apply daily.

If you don’t like the way your sunscreen smells or feels when applied, the chances are you aren’t going to wear it as often as you should. This is especially true on your face, which receives the most direct sunlight over time.

A sunscreen that clogs your pores and leaves your face feeling greasy is not something you are going to apply daily, and daily use is the key to getting the anti-aging benefits of sunscreen.

Anti-Aging Benefits of Sunscreen

Almost 90% of the visual signs of aging are substantially increased by sun exposure. The single most effective skin care product available for reducing this exposure is sunscreen. In fact, the best sunscreens can block between 75%-85% of UV rays. Over time, this reduction in harmful exposure provides incredible benefits that include:

  • Reduce wrinkling and saggy skin
  • Avoid hyper pigmentation of the skin
  • Prevent skin cancer
  • Nourish and moisturize
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Repair damage and fight free radicals

What to Look for in Sunscreen

Protection – Look for sunscreens that contain micronized particulates like zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These tend to provide the most uniform coverage. For your arms and legs select a sunscreen that is SPF 15 or greater, and for your face go with something SPF 40 and up.

Moisturize – A great way to remember to wear sunscreen daily is to pick a multi-purpose product like a moisturizer that also contains protection. Moisturizers with SPF tend to feel less greasy and have very pleasant smells. There are even oil free versions available for those with sensitive skin.

Antioxidants, Vitamin E and other ingredients – A wide array of added ingredients are available in sunscreens today. Antioxidants and Vitamin E have both shown to fight environmental damage and benefit the skin. However, depending on your skin type there may be other ingredients to look for in a sunscreen that would be beneficial to you.

Natural Coenzyme Q10 Supplements

The Benefits and Uses of CoQ10 for Anti-Aging

Would you love to have the energy that you had 10 years ago?

If so, then here’s a fact for you: 95% of your energy is produced at the cellular level but production levels drop as you age.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is produced naturally by the human body and is vital for the fundamental operations of our cells, including energy production and disease prevention. CoQ10 levels decrease over time, but scientific evidence shows that those levels can be restored by taking CoQ10 supplements. This can have a profound effect on your overall health.

Your cells use CoQ10 to produce the energy your body needs for new cell growth and for cellular maintenance. In fact, about 95% of our cellular energy is generated in the mitochondria where CoQ10 goes to work each day. It also helps protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules such as free radicals. However, when CoQ10 levels diminish with age, our cell’s ability to carry on even the basic metabolic functions is weakened.

If you want to preserve the functioning of your cells, we highly recommend taking Natural Coenzyme Q10 supplements regularly.

Benefits of Natural Coenzyme Q10

Coenzymes help digest food and execute other body functions. They also help safeguard your heart and skeletal muscles. CoQ10 has been used for decades to help with cardiovascular conditions, especially heart failure and high blood pressure. It boosts your energy levels and helps to speed your body’s recovery from exercise because it plays a major role in muscular regeneration at the cellular level.

In addition, research has shown that CoQ10 helps your immune system. Higher levels of Coenzyme Q10 are associated with lower rates of cancer, diabetes, gum disease, Parkinson’s, muscular dystrophy, muscular degeneration and periodontal disease.

Natural Coenzyme Q10 Maintenance Dosage

The standard CoQ10 dosage is about 100 mg per day, taken with meals. However, some people choose to take as much as 200 mg per day. It is best to start out with the typical dosage as suggested on the supplement packaging.

Consult with your doctor before increasing your dosage as taking over 100 mg per day of CoQ10 has been reported to cause mild insomnia in some people. In addition, taking doses exceeding 300 mg per day for extended periods of time can be harmful to your liver.

A Natural Disease Fighter

Because of the regenerative power of CoQ10, there’s a ton of research being conducted right now in the anti-aging arena. It’s effect when taken as a supplement or used topically is being heavily studied because it truly is proving to have some amazing effects on a wide-spread basis. Basically, it works constantly at repairing and regenerating cells and tissue throughout your entire body.

Because of its ability to not only stop cellular degeneration, but to repair it, Coenzyme Q10 is being used in preliminary trials as a treatment for such neurodegenerative diseases as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS. So far, the results are promising. Not only are the symptoms lessened, the progression of the diseases is actually slowed and longevity is increased.

Waging the War on Anti-Aging

As you can see, Coenzyme Q10 is a big gun to have in your anti-aging arsenal. In addition to its desease-fighting properties, it also helps keep your skin looking young. As you get older and stop producing as much of the enzyme, your body can’t produce adequate collagen and elastin, and you get wrinkles, thinning skin, and age spots.

In addition to taking a daily supplement, there are also topical cosmetics containing Coenzyme Q10 that you can use in order to fight wrinkles from the outside, too. CoQ10 is one of the best supplements that you could add your daily regimen if you want to maintain good health and a youthful appearance.

Our Top Picks

Now that you’re ready to boost your energy and start really waging the war against aging, give one of these supplements that we’ve picked out a shot.

  2. Nature Made’s CoQ10 100mg Softgels: Nature Made has been producing supplements for more than 40 years and their Coenzyme Q10 is produced naturally via fermentation. It’s a good, solid product produced by a company with experience and values.

Now that you know why you need CoQ10, would you like to know how to fight off disease and get rid of uncomfortable bloating? If so, let’s move onto the next section.

Japanese Skin Care & Anti-Aging Secrets

japanese skin care secrets

The goal of Japanese skin care is to have flawless porcelain skin and over centuries they have developed highly effective techniques for achieving it. With a traditional approach, the Japanese use mostly natural botanicals and elements from the earth in their regimens. However, while these methods are customary to the Japanese, they may seem quite unusual to those of us in the west, so how far would you be willing to go for skin like Nicole Kidman?

Drinking Collagen with Water or Green Tea

For just a few dollars a day, drinking collagen with your water or tea is a simple and cheap remedy for reducing wrinkles, hiding those blemishes and firming up your skin. Collagen is needed for skin strength and elasticity and for many years Japanese women have been drinking large doses of collagen as supplement to their diets.

In the west, collagen has been widely used by doctors in various types of cosmetic surgery. We have doctors inject it into our face and lips and we rub it into our wrinkles daily with creams, lotions and serums. However, in the east it is soo popular that you can even buy flavored bottles of tea or water containing 10,000 mg of collagen dissolved in it right at the corner store or out of vending machines.

Eating Collagen Infused Food

As the main protein of the connective tissue in animals, collagen is a long, fibrous protein that gives strength and structure to tissues and cells. However, unlike in America, collagen infused food is everywhere in Japan. From restaurants to collagen-rich beef tendons at the local grocery store, collagen food seems to be everywhere in Japan.

Nightingale Droppings Facial

This is not a joke, but rather an extremely common practice in Japan. Apparently, nightingale droppings have a beneficial enzyme that has been used for centuries in Japanese facial treatments. The droppings are turned into a fine and almost odorless powder that is mixed with face wash when cleaning your face or mixed with pastes and applied as a face pack. Nightingale droppings are said to lighten the skin while smoothing the complexion and leaving the skin feeling soft and nourished.
