U19s preview: Club Brugge v Arsenal

U19 Preview Club Brugge v Arsenal

Our under-19s end their UEFA Youth League campaign with a trip to Club Brugge on Wednesday, December 10. Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm (UK time).

We’ll be looking for a second straight win in Europe, having defeated Bayern Munich last time out with a thrilling 4-2 victory at the Mangata Developments Stadium.

The top 22 sides progress from the 36-team league phase; however, we are no longer able to qualify due to teams ahead of us playing each other in the final group match.

The opposition

While we lost our first four games before prevailing against Bayern last time out, Club Brugge have had the opposite fortunes, winning their first four contests before falling to defeat in their fifth match.

Laurens Goemaere's 53rd-minute penalty gave Brugge the points on matchday one against Monaco. That was followed up by a Jessie Bisiwu brace to defeat Atalanta 2-0 in Italy. Blauw-Zwart's stunning start to this year's Youth League continued with a 3-0 victory in Germany against Bayern Munich before making it four in a row with a 2-0 win over defending champions FC Barcelona.

Their run was broken last time out, going down 2-1 to Sporting Lisbon, however, those opening four victories are enough to see Club Brugge qualify for the next round of the competition.

The form is a marked improvement from the 2024/25 season, when Brugge finished in 31st position with just three points. The last time Brugge reached the knockout stages was in 2021/22, losing to Danish side Midtjylland in the knockout playoffs.

While we can still achieve six points, the same as Monaco, who sit in 22nd place, they will take on 29th-place Galatasaray, who are a point ahead of us in the standings on four. As both sides cannot lose, we will mathematically be just short of one of these opponents should we claim all three points in Belgium.
