L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Reviews

Youth Code is a new line of skin products from L’Oreal Paris, promising to rejuvenate the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and leave facial features appearing more rested.

The line, which includes Serum Intense, Day Lotion SPF30, Eye Cream Daily Treatment, and Day/Night Cream, is formulated based on L’Oreal’s “GenActiv Technology” (labeled “Pro-Gen Technology” in L’Oreal’s U.K. market), which the company claims increases the skin’s own regenerative power and is based on research into the way the skin’s genes are activated.

In conjunction with independent researchers, L’Oreal studied how skin reacts after being stressed and the process by which it regenerates. The Youth Code products act to stimulate this regenerative process faster than it would naturally occur.

Reviews of the Youth Code line have been mixed. L’Oreal’s consumer testing showed that approximately 3/4 of the reviewers positively reported that their skin felt rejuvenated, appearance of wrinkles was reduced, and they noticed a more rested appearance.

External, independent reviews are about half positive and half negative for this product line. Those who enjoyed positive results generally reported that all the products were lightweight, went on smoothly and left the face feeling soft. A majority found that their wrinkles did appear less prominent, and a smaller percentage reported receiving compliments from others on their more youthful appearance. Most reported that there was no heavy or noticeable smell, and that any negligible scent was pleasant. Very few complained of a greasy texture or exacerbation of acne.

Of the negative reviews, the primary complaint was that none of the products in this line improved wrinkle appearance, and a small percentage reported that it made their wrinkles more prominent. The Eye Cream in particular received the most unfavorable reviews, with complaints of irritation, darker circles and increased puffiness. A majority reported that all the products in the line dried out their skin and made it appear duller, rather than glowing or luminous. Several reviewers went on to state that applying foundation makeup over the products did nothing to improve or cover this dull property.

Neutral comments, from both the positive and negative reviewers, were that the Serum Intense is of a texture more like a cream than a serum, which some users found beneficial but others found disappointing; and the fact that all the Youth Code products give the skin a matte texture.

In summary, L’Oreal Paris’ Youth Code line of products is intended to make facial skin feel renewed, diminish the appearance of wrinkles, and promote a more rested appearance. Whether or not these products live up to their claims is questionable, based on the variance of reviews. While it may be effective for many individuals, clearly it’s not recommended for everyone.

I LOVE this Youth Code line!!
I use the under eye cream, serum and the spf 30 daily lotion every morning.

I have a scar from my childhood that rested in my eye crease and after 3-4 weeks of using the products everyday my scar is lifted and pulled back like I had an eye lift!

My dark circles under my eyes have lightened up so much that I don’t have to wear foundation or cover up any more.

I suggestedthe creams to my mother and her face appears to be lifted and smoother.

I’ve been telling everyone and would recomend it to all!!

Well I have been using Oil of Olay and I have read fantastic reviews about that product. It only made my skin and wrinkles look worse . I have used it for years and decided I was wasting my money and giving up. So I am trying Youth Code by Loreal. I am not expecting miracles and I know that everyone has different skin types with different reactions to products. Other products by Loreal I have just loved!

I’ve just used this product (the day cream) for the first time and now my face is stinging badly.
Clearly there’s an allergen in it that shouldn’t be there – I’m not especially allergic either – and this seems to be a common problem!

        Hey Olive,
Sorry to hear that you’re having a reaction to this; are you by chance allergic to tree nuts? Karin brought this to ingredient to our attention and I’m curious as to whether or not it’s affecting other people, too. Otherwise, we’ll check into some of the other ingredients as well.

I had the same rash problem, Googled ingredients Avobenzone & Octislate learned they can cause rash so I discontinued use. Then discovered there’s a warning inside the lable to contact Dr. if a rash occurs.

Have your found a good replacement product?

I saw my dermatologist 2 days ago. She prescribed Locoid Lipocream (hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1%) Cream. She told me to wash the affected area only with water & use no products other than that cream. after 2 days the itching is lessened, the redness is decreased, & the texture of my skin seems to be closer to normal. I am to apply this twice a day until the skin returns to normal, probably about 2 weeks. I called L’Oreal & they offered to pay the doctor bill, the cost of the prescription & the original cost of the product as long as I can send receipts & the doctor’s diagnosis. I hope this helps!

Jessica…thanks for the advice. I also contacted Loreal, but apparently they are in training today. I will call again on monday. I did send an email…and I used to work for their professional division and have never had any issues with them or any of their products before. Which…is why I trusted the product in the first place. I may contact my doctor for a cortisone cream … argggh just what any of who are taking care of our skin want to deal with, right?!

I had a very similar reaction. I used the serum on my face twice (at night, and the next morning) and once on my neck/chest/shoulders. My face is swollen, itchy & COVERED in little red bumps. There is a lesser, but noticeable, reaction on my neck as well. I have never encountered a reaction like this to any skincare product in the past. It has been several days since I stopped using the product & I have no relief from the symptoms. I have a dermatologist’s appointment tomorrow. Has anyone found something that has helped?

I used a free sample of this from a magazine, and had a similar reaction – tiny red bumps, weird orange-peel texture on my whole face and more pronounced, raised redness and flaking near my eyes. I do not have sensitive skin and have never had a reaction like this before. I used the product once, five days ago, and the reaction does not seem to have decreased.

I bought the Youth Code SPF 30 lotion and used it for about one week with no issues. I am acne prone, so with no reaction to the lotion, I thought this product line must be amazing so I bought the Youth Code BB Cream. I am on this site specifically because I googled Youth Code rash. The BB Cream has indeed caused a blistery, red bumpy rash all over the application area on my face. Disgusting and painful. I am on vacation so I won’t be able to get to my Derm for another week. Hoping it subsides on its on…

I purchased the Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting products and have been very dissatisfied. After 2 months the dark spots are NOT fading, even though some are very light. The worst part is that the Day Cream does not absorb well. It turns to pill-like balls when I apply the TrueMatch foundation. I have used several L’Oreal skin care lines & makeup, but I am very unhappy with this line and it will probably go in the trash barely used. I looked several places for the Night Cream and couldn’t find it. I think I know now why they never put it on the market. I guess it’s a blessing or I would have wasted even more money.

I can’t say I have. Actually I have nothing but good things to say about this product. It’s diminished my blackheads, made my skin glow, and made those tired mommy eyes of mine dark circle free after only 3 days :) then again I’m only in my mid 20s and don’t have bad skin other than the dark spots under my eyes. Maybe it depends on your skin type? I’m not sensitive to anything so that may have something to
        Do with it.

I use the serum( which I especially love, very light and absorbs easily), and the day SPF 30 and the eye cream. I find that the day cream does take a couple minutes to absorb, but I also use true match liquid foundation and I find as long as I let the moisturizer absorb, the foundation goes on smoothly. The eye cream stings a tiny bit when I first apply it, but as it absorbs the sting goes away. I find that with most eye products though. My skin does look/feel refreshed, but it took about two weeks, twice a day application to see results. I am hoping to see further improvement on my deeper wrinkles with further use. The one complaint is that my skin is sensitive and I found that the first couple days I used the products I had a small reaction of red bumps within a half hour of using them. It disappeared quickly over the next hour and after a few more days of use I had no reaction at all. Perhaps my skin just needed to adjust.

I also have had a bad allergic reaction to the Youth Code Serum. I do not have sensitive skin and have no allergies. I used this for 2 weeks twice a day hoping it would calm down but did not. I had intense itching on my face and small bumps. I had to get a itch cream to use and even this took awhile to work. I also had a problem with the serum balling up and looking like paint chips on my face, or as if I was peeling. Not good…

I have read everyone’s opinion and experiences. I am 30 and i looked online for a cream for women my age to use and youth code came up along with other over the top expensive products. I have a family and can’t afford $100 creams. I bought and used the day night cream last week. I loved it so much I went back and bought the serum and eye cream yesterday. I don’t really know about the results yet but it feels great on my skin. The weird thing is I’m allergic and get break outs on lots of skin products but not this one. Proactive dried my skin out so badly I had puss coming out of my skin. I know that’s gross but that’s how bad my skin reacts to most products. So far I love this skin line and I will be coming back to tell you my results.

I love the youth code line. I everything from the eye cream to the corrector and have had no issues at all! If anything, the dark circles under my eyes are gone. I just bought the corrector a week ago, so we’ll see how that goes. There is some pilling when I use my foundation but I just get it all rubbed in and then take a large powder brush to my face. It gets rid of the pilling instantly. Love it love it love it!! The only complaint I have is the 20.00 pricetag for lotion. Really? Oh well, the price we pay to stay looking younger :-)

I tried L’Oreal Youth Code Luminise , a purple Night Cream and a serum in a tube in this range. After a few days use, my face swelled significantly and became itchy, red and almost scab-like to the touch. This subsided after I stopped using these products for a week. I then introduced Luminise and within a day the same symptoms started to appear so I’m afraid the whole lot went in the bin, very worrying and disappointing as I usually don’t have any reaction to skin creams. Just want people to be aware of this !

I have sun/age spots (darkened patches of skin) from birth control. Even after I went off, the spots did not go away. Once I got pregnant, I got a lot of little clusters all around my checks and forehead. I NEVER thought any product will fully rid of every mark on my skin. However, the Lady Soma Renew Serum, with the Lady Soma Masque, significantly faded them and with a little make-up made them a lot less apparent.

I’ve tried various skin lighteners out there. Even by prescription. The ones prescribed made my skin peel, burn and turn red until I had to stop using them. Lady Soma did not irritate my skin at all and I saw results in the first few weeks. Overall my skin just looks fresher and brighter. The best product I have found over the counter.

I started using L’Oreal youth code BB cream with SPF 15 ligh shade about a month ago. Two weeks ago I noticed some itching that started on my chin, then I started noticing my face breaking out on my chin, cheek, around my lips and neck. I went to the “quick care walk-in clinic” and was misdiagnosed with impetigo! I immediately stopped using anything on my face so I wouldn’t spread anything. Was given antibiotics and sent home from work for 2 days due to it being highly contagious. Four days later I was not convinced it was impetigo so I went to see my family physician who immediately said I DID NOT HAVE IMPETIGO! He then brought in another physician and after much discussion concluded the rash on my face was an allergic reaction to some ingredient in the L’Oreal youth code BB cream. I was given a Kenalog injection for the inflammation, a 1% steroid cream for the itching. By the way I notice the question in many of the other notes I’ve read mention allergies to nuts, I am not allergic to any nuts. I am however very unhappy that I missed 2 days of work :/

I too found this board searching for the same thing. I don’t normally have reactions to skin creams. I don’t have sensitive skin. The rash only affected the areas of my skin that are usually the driest. As far as I know I am not allergic to tree nuts.. I’ve never had any reaction after eating them. So if I am it’s an allergy that popped up overnight. The only thing I did differently before having a reaction was use the Youth Code serum, the moisturizer & the BB cream all together. I was exhausted and fell asleep before washing my face. I woke up in the morning with a swollen face, and a raised rash. Horrible.

OK, this one has been making me crazy because at first glance there doesn’t seem to be anything in the product that would bother anybody that doesn’t have a tree nut allergy. Still, SOMETHING is causing an issue here so I started digging. The only thing that I could find was that niacinamide, one of the ingredients listed, can cause red raised rashes, hives, itching and a red flush. I wonder if that’s the problem? Jennifer, have you (or anybody else that’s having this reaction) ever had a problem with niacin? Have you used any other products and gotten this result? If you have, and still have the product, check and see if there’s niacinamide in it. We’ve gotta figure this one out.

I had a friend/doctor suggest Vit D3 oil…so I’m trying it on half of my face/neck and hydrocortisone on the other half…just to see which works better. I’ll post my results b/c if any of the other users of this product are like myself and have never even had acne, I’m sure they will be searching for something to help them! I’d highly suggest testing this product on a small area of the neck before use for any future users!

I didn’t think anything about it. I bought my own bb cream about a week or so ago, and the peeling keeps seeming to get worser. I really don’t think I’m allergic to anything in it. my face has never reacted this way with any other cream.

I also started using youth code dark spot corrector for 1 week and I love what I see but not so much how it feels. The skin on my upper cheekbone and chin and front of my neck have a very rough dry skin, itchy and burning sensation..especially after my skin care routine. I thought thats how the product worked, kinda like a chemical peel, by removing the top layer of your skin and then new fresh skin will appear after the healing process..revealing ‘new skin’ I am going to try and wait it out. Its not that bad and so far I see the results beginning after one week.
But I understand that some women have bad reactions and have to stop but I will wait and see if it doesnt get worse I will continue using it until I see the results I am looking for.

I have been using the YOUTH CODE DAY LOTION for a while now. Purchased a new bottle yesterday, applied it after my shower last evening….the usual amount….woke up this morning with BALLOON FACE! :( My eyes were nearly swollen shut and my entire face was very noticeably swollen. I resorted to taking an allergy pill around 9a.m. and another one around 3p.m. and I am still suffering these side effects :( The swelling and slight burning sensation are still very apparent almost 24 hours after applying. Is this possibly due to a bad batch? Has anyone else experienced this? Looking forward to some insight and hoping this isn’t going to get worse, may have to head to the Walk-in Clinic :(

When I started using the L’Oreal Age Perfect Day/Night cream, I started waking up with itchy, watery eyes, and some burning sensation around the eyes. I tried to figure out what was causing it, since I don’t have allergies of any kind. I didn’t suspect the cream since I had been using L’Oreal Face/Neck Revita Lift cream with no problems. In fact, I was very pleased with it. Used it for many years. Now everything seems to indicate NEW or NEW and IMPROVED. I dread those words when I have been using a product that works. Well, not finding my old creams very easily anymore, I decided to try the NEW products. I, also, tried the Youth Code Day Cream, and the Youth Code BB Cream, and it added considerably more problems. My eyelids got swollen, and redness around the eyes with dark red rash circles down to my cheeks that were slightly swollen, also. The discomfort was so bad..burning/stinging/itching sensation. The dryness and peeling like sunburn on and under the eyelids. I had also used the Youth Code Foaming Gel cleanser to wash my face. I was planning to go to the doctor, when I figured out it was L’oreal products, I stopped using them for a week, and my face finally started to get better. The swelling disappeared, and my eyes felt good, after treating them with home remedies, and allergy pills. Well, I went to get the L’Oreal AGE PERFECT for Mature Skin, thinking it was only the Youth Code products that I was allergic to. I used it once, and low and behold, it set the whole allergic reaction again. I am relieving my poor eyes again from just slight red rash/dryness, this time..on my 3rd day. It takes time to heal. I returned all the products back to the drugstore, and got my refund. I will not be using any more of L’Oreal’s products, though I have to say I was very happy with her products before. It has made me very cautious, and I’m looking for milder products to use. 7-21-13

This problem really has me stumped because it’s obviously an issue but the products don’t appear to have any common ingredients that would cause this kind of reaction in even a handful of people, let alone in as many users as we’ve had report in about it. My first thought was that it was the nut allergy thing but apparently that’s not the case for a couple of reasons.

First, most of you report that you don’t HAVE any nut allergies, and second, the ingredient isn’t in all of the products that are causing problems.

The only logical solution is that it’s a reaction being caused by a combination of ingredients interacting chemically. Either that, or else the products contain an ingredient that isn’t listed because there’s nothing in any of these products that aren’t found in other popular brands that people are using with no problems whatsoever.

It would be nice to get an answer from L’Oreal about this so I’m sending them an email. I recommend that you all do the same so that they are at least aware of the problem. If you get an answer back, please come back and share it with us all, and I’ll do the same. Til then, good luck with your new products, and I’d recommend avoiding the Youth Code products, and if you’re going to try the Age Perfect line, be sure to spot test first.

For those of you experiencing a rash from this product – I visited the doctor yesterday and all he gave me was benadryl (which still helps with the itching and redness). I also bought 1% hydrocortisone cream, which really really helps with the rash. I still have it, but it’s hardly visible, only noticeable when i rub my skin with my hands. It works very quickly, BUT only use a little and for up to 3 days cause steroid cream can thin out your skin and even blanche it if you’re a POC. Still, instead of waiting 5+ days for this nasty reaction to go away on its own, I recommend benadryl, hydrocortisone, and lots of water. Stay hydrated and moisturized!
